How to convert a film negative to a photo

  1. Digitise the negative. Use a scanner with colour correction off, or photograph it on a light box, tablet or bright window with your phone.
  2. Drop it in. Choose Colour or B&W. For the best colour, click “Pick film border” then click the clear orange edge of the film.
  3. Fine-tune and download. Adjust brightness, warmth and contrast, use “Pick neutral grey” on something white or grey, then download a full-resolution JPG or PNG.

Why a simple “invert” doesn’t work for colour negatives

Colour negative film has an orange base (the “mask”) built in. Simply inverting colours in a photo editor turns that orange into a heavy blue cast and a flat image. This converter works like a darkroom printer: it measures the film density in each colour channel relative to the film base, removes the mask, and sets black and white points for each channel separately. You get a natural, balanced photo straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert negatives photographed with my phone?

Yes. Photograph the negative on a light box or a bright white tablet screen, keeping it flat and in focus. Use “Pick film border” on the clear edge for the best colours.

Does it work for black-and-white negatives?

Yes. Choose B&W mode, which converts to greyscale and sets the tonal range automatically.

My colours look off. What should I do?

First click “Pick film border” and click the clear, unexposed edge of the film. Then use “Pick neutral grey” on something that should be white or grey, like a wall, cloud or shirt. The Warmth and Tint sliders handle the rest.

Can I convert slides or X-rays?

Slides (positive transparencies) don’t need inverting. For X-rays or inverted graphics, use “Plain invert” mode.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Every image is processed inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent over the internet, which also makes it fast and safe for private photos.

What file should I scan to?

Scan to high-quality JPG or PNG with any automatic colour correction or “negative” mode turned off.
